Image: MODIS-Terra, 3/5/2012, Gulf of Mexico. This Near Real Time (NRT) sea surface temperature image shows a multiple eddy system evident in the movement of the thermal fronts progressing off the coast. A larger eddy is in the process of pinching off the northern edge of the Loop Current as it moves towards the southeast coast of Louisiana. Warm bodies of water, such as this eddy, can be associated with clearer blue water. Together these conditions are excellent for yellowfin and blackfin tuna fishing.
