For several fishing guides tarpon season may be over, but for some of us we are at the half way point. There are still plenty of tarpon from Boca Grande to Tarpon Springs. We have jumped several fish over 100 pounds this week with one well over 160 pounds. Most of the action has been on D.O.A. bait busters and a few on live bait. The trick is hitting it just right sometime the fish are not always showing or sometimes just not eating when you are there. You may need to put some time in to figure these fish out, but well worth the reward. Most years the tarpon are in good catchable numbers from March thru October so there is plenty of time to get your tarpon fix in before the winter.
There is also plenty of grouper, cobia, and spanish mackerel action just offshore. We have been catching a mix bag of all these fish on every trip with grouper up to 18 pounds and cobia up to 45 pounds. Most of the action has been on small rock piles in 28 to 38 feet of water off of Hudson. There are spanish mackerel on all the artificial reefs and any area with hard bottom. Most of the action has been on small white bait fished with a long shank hook. I don't like to use wire so I use 30 to 40 pound mono leader for more bites.
