Friday evening I took a ride over to Star Island to check on the standings for the Whitewater Challenge to see five bigeyes laid out getting dressed and Rich up on the scales weighing in another. There were a pile of them caught at a wide open bite at the Hudson. I heard about a boat hooking up with eight at once and the boats only fishing with four rigs out because of cutoffs when they hooked to many at the same time. The tournament was limited to outboards only, so the boats from Star Island that were in on the bite were all those fifty knot boats with a bunch of outboards hanging off the back. The fish are worth $7-$10/pound, but a hundred mile run in an outboard rendered most of them priceless. The results of the tournament are :
1st place tuna - 219 lbs bigeye - FISH'N ADDICTION
2nd place tuna - 197 lbs bigeye - BOLSHEVIK
3rd place tuna - 186 lbs bigeye - WHITE WATER
1st place yellowfin - 66 lbs - TONTO
2nd place yellowfin - 65 lbs - DONE DEAL
3rd place yellowfin - 64 lbs - DONE DEAL
1st place shark - 176 lbs mako - DEEPER
1st place striped bass - 47.4 lbs - TOP GUN
2nd place striped bass - 43.5 lbs - TOP GUN
3rd place striped bass - 42.2 lbs - TOP GUN
1st place bluefish - 12.8 lbs - INSTIGATOR
2nd place bluefish - 11.8 lbs - INSTIGATOR
3rd place bluefish - 9.8 lbs - LIL MARLENA
Shark fishing is still pretty much as it has been for a couple of weeks; a couple of bites and if you are lucky, one is a mako. Really lucky and it is a keeper.
Striped bass fishing changed over this past week. It had been all big fish in the deeper waters around Great Eastern and the Elbow, but now some new fish have moved into the Rips, so instead of fishing for a couple of big fish boats can opt to fish for a limit of 10-15 pounders.
The falsies are here, but really not heavy enough yet. You see a patch of them working bait once in a while, but they are pretty widely scattered.
Fluke fishing is not over officially yet, but itís close to it.
Iíve finally got the Montauk Sportfishing forum in the proper way. Check it out at http://www.montauksportfishing.com/forum.html and contribute. It wonít work if Iím the only one posting. Let everyone know where you fished, when and what you caught. Or ask questions. Whatís the down side? NONE.
